Change Your Mind Day 2008
On April 19th, The Bay Area's annual gathering of Buddhist practitioners gathered in Philippe Park in Safety Harbor. The day consisted of a wide variety of area Buddhist groups, and included talks, guided meditations, sadhana practice demonstrations, a meditation class for kids, a vegetarian pot-luck lunch, and more.
The weather was beautiful and the atmosphere was very clear, joyous, and, inspiring. Shambhala St. Pete director Paula Bickford gave an excellent talk about Shambhala Buddhism and basic goodness.
Sangha member Kevin Pitz noted, "as someone somewhat new to Buddhism, I found it interesting all the different groups that practice in different ways and different styles. Like Paula said underneath it all we are all practicing for the same things." There definitely was a feeling in the air that the differences in the practice styles of the different groups were merely cosmetic and that underlying that was a common bond and aspiration to realize and share the Buddhadharma.
Also, if you've never heard the Heart Sutra sang in Chinese, as did these two nuns from Guang Ming Temple in Orlando, it's very beautiful and you've been missing out!:
If you missed this year's gathering be sure to keep any eye out next year when the announcements start circulating. It's a fun way to meet and learn about our fellow Buddhist friends in the area.
